Preview: Athens Indians vs. Union City Chargers
Athens is 9-0 against Union City since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Athens Indians will head out on the road to face off against the Union City Chargers at 7:00 p.m. Athens is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
Athens' 18-7 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They were outmatched by Mendon on the road and fell 51-16. While losing is never fun, Athens can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 367th, while Mendon is ranked 120th).
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Union City, who are still winless after their fourth match. They were dealt a 56-19 defeat at the hands of Springport on Tuesday. Union City was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 39-4.
Athens' defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Union City, their loss was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-4.
Everything came up roses for Athens against Union City in their previous matchup back in January of 2020 as the squad secured a 48-21 victory. With Athens ahead 32-10 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
