Softball Game Preview: Bruton Panthers vs. Lafayette Rams

The Bruton Panthers will head out to challenge the Lafayette Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with four consecutive losses for Bruton and 31 for Lafayette dating back to last season.

Bruton lost 21-4 to Poquoson on Friday.

Bruton saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madyson Califano, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double was Califano's first of the season.

Meanwhile, while it was Lafayette who put the first runs on the board on Monday, it was Mathews who put up more. The Rams came up short against the Blue Devils, falling 27-16. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Friday (ten), the Rams still had to take the loss.

Makayla Brooks stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she got on base in five of her six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlin Johnson, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Bruton's record now sits at 2-10. As for Lafayette, their record is now 0-10.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Bruton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Lafayette struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Everything went Bruton's way against Lafayette in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Bruton made off with a 21-4 win. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Rams have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
