Softball Recap: Polk County Comes Up Short

Polk County extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 22 on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-15. They lost 16-2 to the Madison Patriots. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-2 on Tuesday.

As for Madison, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-6 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Madison's part, Kadee Jo Woody was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Woody has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddie Gosnell, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Paige Peek, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Polk County will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Tuscola at 5:30 p.m. on the 16th. Madison and Owen, As for Madison, after both having extra time off, will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field at 5:00 p.m. on the 14th. The Patriots will need to watch out since the Warhorses have now posted at least ten runs in their last five matchups.
