Preview: Vela Sabercats vs. Valley View Tigers

Vela has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Valley View Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Vela focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday.

Vela put the finishing touches on their 11th blowout victory of the season. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Sharyland 69-21 at home. Given Vela's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 301st, while Sharyland is ranked 1153rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Vela can attribute much of their success to Gg Betancourt, who scored 21 points along with three steals, and Janai Coleman, who scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Another player making a difference was Gabrielle Tijerina, who scored two points along with four steals.

Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Valley View, who are still winless after their 14th game. They were outmatched by Pioneer on the road and fell 69-19. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Valley View has suffered yet this season.

Vela is on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 19 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 24-5 record this season. As for Valley View, they bumped their record down to 0-14 with that loss, which was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season.

Everything came up roses for Vela against Valley View in their previous matchup back in December of 2023 as the team secured a 93-14 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Vela since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
