Softball Recap: Springfield Spartans vs. Elyria Catholic Panthers
Springfield stacked a 13th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Elyria Catholic Panthers a 10-0 shutout. Winning may never get old, but Springfield sure is getting used to it with their tenth in a row.
Not much got past Sydney Hillyard, who gave up just seven hits to keep Elyria Catholic off the board. Hillyard has been consistent recently: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in 17 consecutive pitching appearances.
At the plate, Melaena Martin was incredible, going 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI. Destiny Ruggiero was another key contributor, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
Even though they lost, Elyria Catholic hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. This was only their first loss (out of six games) when they post two or more strikeouts.
Springfield pushed their record up to 17-7 with that win, which was their seventh straight on the road. As for Elyria Catholic, their loss ended an 11-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 19-6.
