Softball Game Preview: South Williamsport Mountaineers vs. West Shamokin Wolves

The South Williamsport Mountaineers will take on the West Shamokin Wolves at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

South Williamsport is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Holy Redeemer a 10-0 shutout. The victory was familiar territory for the Mountaineers, who have now won four matchups in a row.

Meanwhile, West Shamokin came tearing into Monday's game with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by an 11-5 margin over the Bearcats.

Leah Mondi made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Madi Keirn, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Malena Stewart, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.

West Shamokin's win was their 18th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 20-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for South Williamsport, their win bumped their record up to 16-5.
