Although there are still two more releases of the MaxPreps Xcellent 50 National High School Baseball Rankings, Argyle (Texas) has captured the No. 1 overall ranking and the national championship.

It would be easy to dismiss the type of season Argyle had this year simply because it's a Class 4A school — the third-highest level in Texas — and not in the state's largest classification. However, that type of thinking overlooks the tremendous season the Eagles put together.

In defeating Sweeny 5-0 for the state championship, Argyle has now reached the state championship game three of the past five seasons and has won two state titles in four years. Argyle also finishes the season with a 37-game winning streak (the longest active streak in the nation) and racked up the wins in impressive fashion.

Argyle outscored opponents 328-44, posting 20 shutouts along the way. Argyle also scored in double figures 22 times. The Eagles also had just three one-run wins during the year. In the playoffs, Argyle won six games by 10 or more runs. During the regular season, Argyle also beat several Class 6A teams, including shutout wins over Midway (Waco) and Sachse — both of which won over 20 games during the season.

Argyle also finishes ahead of Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) and Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) because it competed in the postseason. Argyle needed to get through seven postseason rounds while the other two teams only played a regular season schedule.
