Canyon Lake unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They and the Wimberley Texans were almost perfectly matched up on Friday, but Canyon Lake suffered a 36-35 defeat. The loss came about despite Canyon Lake having been up 28 in the third quarter.

Canyon Lake's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jace Wheeler, who threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.2% of his passes. Wheeler is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in each of the last four games he's played dating back to last season. Peyton King was Wheeler's top target, picking up 93 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Maverick Jacobs was nothing short of spectacular for Wimberley: he rushed for 102 yards and three scores, and also picked up 59 receiving yards and one touchdown. Those three rushing touchdowns gave Jacobs a new career-high. Jackson Parker was another key player, throwing for 218 yards and a pair of TDs.

Canyon Lake and Wimberley should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Canyon Lake will challenge Crockett at 7:30 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (427 vs. 957). Meanwhile, Wimberley (ranked 95th) will meet Fredericksburg (ranked 680th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
