Basketball Recap: New Covenant's Winning Streak Snapped at Three Games

If New Covenant was riding high fresh off their 67-45 takedown of Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The New Covenant Gryphons fell to the Roanoke Catholic Celtics 68-62. The Gryphons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Celtics apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

It was another big night for Jayden Johnson, who went 13 of 21 en route to 35 points and three steals for Roanoke Catholic. Those 35 points gave Johnson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Mason Williams, who went 7 for 11 on his way to 16 points.

New Covenant moved to 15-7 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Roanoke Catholic, they pushed their record up to 17-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

New Covenant will square off against The Covenant at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday. As for Roanoke Catholic, they will challenge Virginia Episcopal School at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Roanoke Catholic's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 16 matchups.
