Basketball Recap: St. Michael Starts off Right with Win over Valley

St. Michael had to kick off their season on the road on Tuesday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against the Valley Pirates by a score of 59-52. That's more bragging rights for the Cardinals, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Leading St. Michael to victory were Logan Belgarde and Ryan Legah. Belgarde shot 45% from the field en route to 16 points and eight rebounds, while Legah posted 18 points and five steals. Those eight boards gave Belgarde a new career-high. Deshawn Smith was another key player, putting up seven points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Valley is on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. St. Michael will head out to take on Many Farms at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Valley, they will take on Pinon at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup will give the Pirates their first taste of in-conference action this season.
