Basketball Recap: Luke Grollmes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Minden over Holdrege

Minden was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 72-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Holdrege Dusters. Even though they lost, the Whippets' still made a splash on offense and bumped their average scoring up to 50.3 points per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Minden lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Luke Grollmes, who went 9 for 21 on his way to 23 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Grollmes a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Brett Eckhardt, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.

Even though they lost, Minden smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Holdrege's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Baron Medina led the charge by going 7 of 12 en route to 18 points. Medina is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games he's played. Garret Johnson was another key player, going 8 for 16 on his way to 18 points.

Minden now has a losing record at 7-8. As for Holdrege, their victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Holdrege beat Minden by a score of 78-57 on Tuesday.
