Softball Recap: Wheeling Wildcats vs. Schaumburg Saxons
Wheeling extended their losing streak to six on Friday, dropping them down to 7-9. They lost 12-0 to the Schaumburg Saxons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Saxons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-0 last Thursday.
Wheeling saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Olivia Aquino, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles. Those doubles marked the first that Aquino has hit this season.
As for Schaumburg, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 13-3. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.
On Schaumburg's side, Alana Nieto was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Nieto has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Evelyn Blahnik was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Madison Linnemann, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Wheeling will face off against Hoffman Estates at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Schaumburg, they will take on Conant at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
