Basketball Recap: Mater Academy Charter Takes a Loss

Mater Academy Charter's tournament run continued when they took on Port Charlotte on Sunday. The Mater Academy Charter Lions were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 49-48 to the Port Charlotte Pirates. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 310th, while the Pirates are ranked 71st).

Mater Academy Charter lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jet Walis, who posted 12 points and three steals. Ethan Davis was another key player, putting up nine points along with five assists and five boards.

Mater Academy Charter has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season. As for Port Charlotte, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-3.

Mater Academy Charter will take on Hallandale in a tournament on Friday. Mater Academy Charter is facing Hallandale at the right time seeing as Hallandale is stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Port Charlotte, they will head out to challenge Golden Gate at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing isn't great for Golden Gate: they have been struggling with four straight losses at home, while Port Charlotte has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road.
