Baseball Game Preview: Swett Warriors vs. Point Arena Pirates

The Swett Warriors will square off against the Point Arena Pirates at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Swett is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.

Wednesday just wasn't the day for Swett's offense. They came up short against St. Patrick-St. Vincent last Wednesday, falling 7-0. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Warriors' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Swett saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was James Gibson, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one double. Gibson is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games he's played.

Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Point Arena walked away with it. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 4-0 shutout on Wednesday.

The result came thanks to Aidan O'Neil's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jimmy Owens, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Point Arena's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-5 when he doesn't). Mateo VanCleave was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.

Point Arena pushed their record up to 11-5 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Swett, their loss dropped their record down to 12-6-2.
