Basketball Recap: Lauren Thompson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Chaparral over Mountain Vista

If Chaparral was riding high fresh off their 66-26 takedown of Ponderosa last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Chaparral Wolverines received a blow on Friday as they fell 75-57 to the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles. The Wolverines were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Golden Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Chaparral lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Lauren Thompson, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds. She has become a key player for Chaparral: the team is 6-1 when she posts at least eight boards, but 7-9 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jade Monroe, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 16 points.

Kennedy Spellman continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Mountain Vista, going 9-for-19 on her way to 33 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Spellman has scored at least a third of Mountain Vista's points. Leanna Rivera was another key player, going 5-for-8 en route to 14 points and seven boards.

Chaparral's loss dropped their record down to 13-10. As for Mountain Vista, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 15-8.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Chaparral will take on Denver South at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mountain Vista, they will face off against Cherokee Trail at 4:00 p.m. on March 1st. Cherokee Trail is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.3 points per game this season.
