Softball Recap: Coal City Takes a Loss

Coal City extended their losing streak to five on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 17-12 in the process. They fell 5-0 to the Pontiac Indians. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Coalers of the 5-1 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Pontiac, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 19-8. Five seems to be a good number for they as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

For Pontiac's part, Elena Krause made a splash no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. Krause has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Izzy Hinz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most hits she has posted over her last 12 matchups.

Coincidentally, Coal City and Pontiac will both be playing Limestone the next time they take the field. The Coalers will head out to face the Rockets at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, while the Indians will play them later in the day, at 2:00 p.m.
