Lafayette County might have lost, but man, Jordan Walters was a machine: he rushed for 190 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 7.0 yards per carry. Walters' rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his seventh straight game with at least 109 rushing yards dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gurdon). They blew past Murfreesboro 48-22 on Friday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Go-Devils needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.
Lafayette County better keep an eye on Uriah Gatlin. He was instrumental in Gurdon's win, rushing for 147 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.4 yards per carry, and also picking up 31 receiving yards. With that strong performance, Gatlin is now averaging an impressive 106 rushing yards per game. Another rusher making a difference was Eric Hughes, who rushed for 68 yards and a pair of TDs.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Gurdon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 285 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Gurdon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Tad Cogburn and Jonah Jester.
The win got Gurdon back to even at 2-2. As for Lafayette County, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Lafayette County has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 267.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Gurdon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 189 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Lafayette County couldn't quite finish off Gurdon in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 and fell 39-36. Will the Cougars have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more football content.
