Football Recap: Moreno Valley's Undefeated Season over After Five Games

If Moreno Valley was feeling good fresh off their 21-0 takedown of La Sierra last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Vikings took a 38-30 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chaffey Tigers on Thursday. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in September of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Moreno Valley lost, don't look at Syree Matthews. Despite the final result, he rushed for 219 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 carries. With that strong performance, Matthews is now averaging an impressive 101.2 rushing yards per game.

Alexis Almeida was nothing short of spectacular for Chaffey: he rushed for 146 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Almeida is becoming a predictor of the Tigers' success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is undefeated (and 0-3 when he doesn't).

Having lost for the first time this season, Moreno Valley fell to 4-1. As for Chaffey, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Moreno Valley will welcome Citrus Hill at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks' defense has only allowed 9.2 points per game this season, so the Vikings' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Chaffey, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Rim of the World at 7:00 p.m.
