Basketball Recap: Hayden's Run of Five Straight Victories Now Over

It was a good run, but Hayden unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Friday. They fell 64-56 to the Baboquivari Warriors. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Lobos of the 64-55 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Hayden lost, don't look at Tyler Garner. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. Garner is becoming a predictor of Hayden's success: when he posts at least eight boards the team is 5-2 (and 5-8 when he doesn't). Mario Hong was another key player, going 6 of 8 en route to 12 points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Hayden smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive games.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Baboquivari to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cade Widener, who posted 20 points and five boards. Widener is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 15 every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Mariano Francisco Jr, who scored 14 points.

Hayden's defeat dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Baboquivari, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 17-9 record this season.

Hayden has already played their next match, a 64-50 win against Duncan on the 28th. As for Baboquivari, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 53-39 loss against Valley Lutheran on the 28th.
