Baseball Recap: Portage Takes a Loss

Portage extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping their season record down to 3-11 in the process. They lost 12-4 to the United Lions. The Mustangs were not able to make up for their loss to the Lions from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.

Portage saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Easton Slanoc, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

As for United, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-8. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games.

On United's side, Brendan James made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. James has become a key player for United: the team is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-8 otherwise. James was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryan Felix, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Dmitri Worthington was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

While Portage had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
