Kansas: Cougars Win No. 700 for Weese

Salina South punched its ticket to the Kansas state volleyball tournament by handing fifth-year head coach Mary Pat Weese her 700th career win following the Hutchinson sub-state championship match against Great Bend.

Now the Cougars are hoping to ride the momentum of that 25-21, 26-24 victory during their quest of a 5A state title.

“We didn’t tell the girls about the 700 wins because we didn’t want it to be a big deal, and we wanted this to be about them and not me,” Weese told the Salina Journal. “It just means I’m old, but it’s a milestone, and it sure was sweet to have my 700th win be the championship game at sub-state.



“We had so many players come up huge today, and it’s so nice to have people step up so we don’t have to rely on Taylor (Goodness) all the time. We worked a lot on having people do different things and still capitalize on their strengths, and this team has done a good job of winning the close games and matches the last two weeks.”

Weese, who took over the Cougar program in 2004, won a pair of state championships at Salina Sacred Heart and another at Bennington before her arrival with the Cougar program. Salina South is making its first appearance at the state tournament since 1996.

The Cougars will have their hands full when they begin pool play against top-ranked Bishop Miege at Friday’s 3:30 p.m. match on court ‘B.’ Weese will also guide her team against third-ranked Topeka Seaman and unranked Liberal during Friday’s pool play action.

Should Salina South finish in the top two following pool play, the Cougars would move on to the championship round.
