Softball Game Preview: Cloverleaf Colts vs. Springfield Spartans

The Cloverleaf Colts will take on the Springfield Spartans at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Cloverleaf has given up an average of 10.5 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Cloverleaf lost 15-6 to St. Vincent-St. Mary on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Colts in their meetings with the Fighting Irish: they've now lost four in a row.

Meanwhile, Springfield had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They blew past the Indians 9-1. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won five matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.

Joey Klein spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kendall Crytzer was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Bre Ruggiero was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Springfield pushed their record up to 8-4 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cloverleaf, their loss dropped their record down to 3-7.
