Softball Game Preview: Cardinal Mooney Cougars vs. Calvary Christian Warriors

Cardinal Mooney is 0-5 against Calvary Christian since March of 2020 but things could change on Thursday. The Cougars will square off against the Warriors at 6:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Cardinal Mooney 3.4, Calvary Christian 1.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Cardinal Mooney is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They walked away with a 5-1 win over Clearwater Central Catholic. Winning may never get old, but the Cougars sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.

Erin Sugg spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Kaitlyn Will and Ava Proffitt did most of the damage at the plate: Will went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI, while Proffitt went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases Proffitt has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabella DeCarlo, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Calvary Christian played against Lakewood on Tuesday and won via forfeit.

Calvary Christian pushed their record up to 24-1 with the victory, which was their 21st straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Mooney, their victory bumped their record up to 13-5.

Cardinal Mooney might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Calvary Christian in their previous matchup back in May of 2022. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
