Softball Preview: Sonora Wildcats vs. Calaveras Red Hawks

Sonora is 0-10 against Calaveras since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Sonora Wildcats will head out on the road to square off against the Calaveras Red Hawks at 3:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Sonora had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 13-0 shutout.

KODIE TOWNSEND was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. TOWNSEND has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in 15 consecutive pitching appearances. TOWNSEND was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and a double.

In other batting news, CHEYENNE MATYSHOCK was incredible, going 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs, and three RBI. SYDNEY SELLS was another key contributor, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, Calaveras scored the most runs they've had all season to find success on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 20-2 margin over Amador. The win made it back-to-back victories for Calaveras.

Like Sonora, Calaveras also got a great game from a two-way player: Kamryn Thornburg. She struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). Thornburg was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Avery Cobb, who went 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, and a triple. Another player making a difference was Paige Johnston, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Sonora has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. As for Calaveras, they pushed their record up to 12-3-1 with that victory, which was their third straight at home.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both teams have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sonora has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Calaveras struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.1. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Sonora might still be hurting after the 11-1 defeat they got from Calaveras in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Thankfully for Sonora, Macy Villegas (who tossed six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
