Basketball Recap: Kenna Merrihew's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Aurora over Grand Island Central Catholic

If Aurora was feeling good fresh off their 59-30 takedown of Schuyler last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Aurora Huskies fell 47-40 to the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders on Tuesday. The Huskies haven't had much luck with the Crusaders recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.

Several Huskies players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kenna Merrihew, who almost dropped a double-double with ten points and nine boards. Thanks to that strong game, Merrihew now owns an excellent 45% field goal percentage. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn Staehr, who posted 11 points and six rebounds.

It was another big night for Maggie Herbek, who went 11-for-26 on her way to 30 points along with seven boards and four steals for Grand Island Central Catholic. Those 30 points gave Herbek a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryndal Moody, who had seven points in addition to 12 rebounds and four steals.

Aurora's defeat dropped their record down to 8-10. As for Grand Island Central Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 10-8.

Aurora wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 50-23 loss against Waverly on the 7th. As for Grand Island Central Catholic, they have also already played their next contest, a 43-33 win against Lexington on the 7th.
