Football Recap: Leake County Skates Past Newton with Ease

There's no place like home for Leake County, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They blew past the Newton Tigers 46-16 on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Gators needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

Leake County was led to victory by Davion Townsend and Mashawn Leflore. Townsend rushed for 84 yards and a pair of TDs on only seven carries, while Leflore gained 236 total yards and two touchdowns. Leflore's longest rush was for an impressive 57 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another rusher making a difference was Zechariah Washington, who rushed for 102 yards on only 14 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Leake County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 352 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.

Leake County's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Jacodi Boler and Washington, who each picked up one sack apiece. Another thorn in Newton's side was Boler, who picked up a sack and made eight total tackles (4.0 for loss).

When it comes to explaining why Newton lost, don't look at Tazayvion Townsend. Despite the final result, he rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown, and also threw for five yards and one TD.

Leake County's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Newton, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Leake County and Newton will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Gators are set to face off against their familiar foe Nanih Waiya at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. Meanwhile, Newton will take on rival Lake at 7:00 p.m. on October 3.
