Ventura came tearing into Tuesday's match with five straight wins , and they left with even more momentum. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 victory over the Rio Mesa Spartans. This was payback for the Cougars, who suffered a 5-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Wylan Nelson was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

Nelson wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Josh Woodworth, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Woodworth has posted since back in March.

Ventura was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.

Ventura's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-6-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Rio Mesa, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-17-1.

Ventura will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Spartans: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
