Baseball Recap: Ventura Beats Rio Mesa for Their Sixth Straight Win

Ventura had already won five in a row and they went ahead and made it six on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Rio Mesa Spartans 4-2. For the Cougars, this counts as revenge for the 5-3 win the Spartans walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

Wylan Nelson was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

Nelson wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Josh Woodworth, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Woodworth has posted since back in March.

Ventura was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.

Ventura's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-6-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Rio Mesa, their loss dropped their record down to 5-17-1.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Ventura beat the Spartans by a score of 11-1 on Friday.
