Valley Christian (Chandler, Ariz.) received a huge boost from its defense against
San Tan Foothills (Queen Creek, Ariz.), as the unit scored 12 in defeating
San Tan Foothills (Queen Creek, Ariz.), 27-12.
The Trojans were up 19-6 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by
TJ Widner in the first quarter.
Valley Christian expanded its lead to 21 points entering the fourth quarter. VC scored two times in the third, including once on a defensive touchdown.
The Chandler school's most effective player was Widner. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
The Trojans entered the contest giving up 27.4 points per game this year. Valley Christian held firm on the defensive front, and kept the Sabercats well below the 32.2 points it had been averaging per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which San Tan Foothills took, 46-21.
The victory was a step in the right direction for VC, which was coming off a 35-13 defeat at the hands of Coronado in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for San Tan Foothills, which notched a 32-14 victory over Combs in its previous outing.
In a V Section II game next week San Tan Foothills (4-2) takes on Santa Cruz Valley, and Valley Christian (3-3) will go up against American Christian Academy in a non-conference game.
