Basketball Recap: Southport Comes Up Short

Southport suffered their biggest loss since December 10, 2024 on Thursday. They lost 65-43 to the Greenfield-Central Cougars. The defeat continues a trend for the Cardinals in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now lost four in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Southport lost, don't look at Kassie Mcmasters. Despite the final result, she posted 16 points along with five assists and three steals. Mcmasters has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ryleigh Hamilton, who earned six points and six rebounds.

Madison Sonsini was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double with 20 points and ten boards for Greenfield-Central. Sonsini is becoming a predictor of Greenfield-Central's success: when she posts at least eight rebounds the team is 12-1 (and 4-6 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Chaney Brown, who put up 17 points and five boards.

Southport's loss dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Greenfield-Central, their record is now 16-7.

Southport didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-22 defeat against Franklin Central on the 7th. As for Greenfield-Central, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 54-50 loss against Richmond on the 4th.
