Football Recap: Spruce Mountain Piles Up the Points Against Gray-New Gloucester

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Spruce Mountain). They breezed past the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots to the tune of 58-24 on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Phoenix, who have now won three contests by 30 points or more so far this season.

Spruce Mountain's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Owen Kelvey, who rushed for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 15 carries. Kelvey didn't just play on offense: he also made eight total tackles and defended two passes in addition to snagging an interception. Another rusher making a difference was Austin Armandi, who rushed for 108 yards and two TDs on only eight carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Spruce Mountain was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 305 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in nine consecutive games dating back to last season.

Spruce Mountain didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Levi Richards, Kelvey, Armandi, and Dylan Jewett picked up one apiece.

Spruce Mountain's record is now 3-1. As for Gray-New Gloucester, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Spruce Mountain will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Cape Elizabeth at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. As for Gray-New Gloucester, they will challenge Yarmouth at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
