Preview: Spanish Springs Cougars vs. College Park Cavaliers
The Spanish Springs Cougars and the College Park Cavaliers will round out the year against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Spanish Springs came tearing into Thursday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 43-30 victory over Galena.
Spanish Springs relied on the efforts of Travis Lee, who scored eight points along with four steals, and Owen Hensley, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 17 rebounds. Those 17 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Tanner Bowers, who scored ten points.
Meanwhile, College Park had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They took down The Woodlands 67-52. Given College Park's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 53rd, while The Woodlands is ranked 331st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead College Park to victory, but perhaps none more so than Aiden Buckmon, who scored 22 points along with four steals. The contest was Buckmon's 19th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Martez James, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 16 rebounds.
Spanish Springs' win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-5. As for College Park, their win bumped their record up to 18-2.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Spanish Springs have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like College Park struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 30.9 rebounds per game.
