Recap: Austintown-Fitch Falcons vs. Mayfield Wildcats
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Austintown-Fitch Falcons ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Mayfield 57-54. Given Austintown-Fitch's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 104th, while Mayfield is ranked 646th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Austintown-Fitch to victory, but perhaps none more so than Deshawn Vaughn, who scored 21 points. Those 21 points set a new season-high mark for him. Allen Hill jr was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with eight rebounds and five blocks.
Austintown-Fitch's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.7 points per game. As for Mayfield, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-6.
Austintown-Fitch will be home for the holidays to greet Hickory at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hickory knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matchups -- so hopefully Austintown-Fitch likes a good challenge. As for Mayfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Revere at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
