Softball Recap: Wednesday's Win Is Grant's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

Grant let Ida B. Wells stack six runs on them in the third inning on Wednesday but luckily Grant prevailed anyway. The Generals walked away with a 10-6 win over the Guardians. The game was the first time the Generals have beaten the Guardians on their field since April 19, 2023.

Hazel Heron spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Nora DuLong and Gwyneth Gerber did most of the damage at the plate: DuLong went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Gerber went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple. That's the most runs Gerber has posted since back in April. Aria Hein was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI and one stolen base.

Grant always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. They are 5-2 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Grant has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-13 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.1 runs over those games. As for Ida B. Wells, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost nine of their last 12 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-15 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Grant will square off against Lincoln at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Generals are facing the Cardinals at the right time seeing as the Cardinals are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Ida B. Wells, they will take on Cleveland at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
