Basketball Preview: Colorado Academy Mustangs vs. St. Mary's Academy Wildcats
Colorado Academy is 8-1 against the Wildcats since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Colorado Academy Mustangs' road trip will continue as they head out to face the St. Mary's Academy Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. on February 6th. Colorado Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 192 points over their last three contests.
Colorado Academy can now show off 11 landslide victories after their most recent game on Thursday. They really took it to Eagle Ridge Academy for the full four quarters, racking up a 66-17 victory on the road. Given Colorado Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 43rd, while the Warriors are ranked 225th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Colorado Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Anna Johnson, who scored 17 points along with two steals. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Naomi Wolff was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's Academy struggled with assists on Tuesday (the Pirates had 11 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. St. Mary's Academy took a serious blow against the Pirates, falling 56-26. St. Mary's Academy has not had much luck with the Pirates recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
The losing side was boosted by Emily Rodriguez, who scored six points along with 12 rebounds and four steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Isabel Hernandez, who scored four points along with five rebounds.
Colorado Academy is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season. As for St. Mary's Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Colorado Academy have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 38.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like St. Mary's Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 45.5 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Colorado Academy against the Wildcats in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the team secured a 64-28 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Colorado Academy since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
