Baseball Recap: Athens Comes Up Short

Athens fell victim to University Liggett and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Knights by a score of 1-0. Even though they lost, the Red Hawks' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.4 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Derek Smith and Macklin Ciurla put in work no matter where they played. Throwing, Smith pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Ciurla pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero hits allowed gave him a new career-low. At bat, Smith went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Ciurla went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That stolen base was Smith's first of the season.

In other batting news, Ty Manning stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Athens' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 4-11 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Grayson Conrad, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Athens' loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-12. As for University Liggett, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 17-11-2.

Athens didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 6-1 win against Lamphere on the 28th. As for University Liggett, they have also already played their next match, a 4-3 victory against Grosse Pointe South on the 28th.
