Basketball Recap: Kelliher/Northome's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Saturday

It was a good run, but Kelliher/Northome unfortunately witnessed the end of their eight-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 81-74 to the Marshall Hilltoppers.

Kelliher/Northome lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Kate Thayer, who dropped a double-double on 29 points and 14 rebounds. Thayer has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 42 times she's played. Kylee Binkley was another key player, going 9 for 13 on her way to 24 points in addition to eight boards and five steals.

Even though they lost, Kelliher/Northome smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Marshall found their leader in freshman Chloe Johnson, who went 8 of 18 en route to 34 points and five steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Johnson has scored at least a third of Marshall's points. Another player making a difference was Morgan Lucero, who went 5 for 7 on her way to 16 points.

Kelliher/Northome's defeat dropped their record down to 10-3. As for Marshall, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-6.

Kelliher/Northome wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 99-28 win against Warroad on the 30th. As for Marshall, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Rice Lake at 4:30 p.m. on February 4th.
