Basketball Recap: Tuesday's Loss Ends St. Johns' Winning Streak

After flying high against Hopi last Saturday, St. Johns came back down to earth. The St. Johns Redskins took a 38-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mogollon Mustangs on Tuesday. The Redskins' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

St. Johns lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Evelyn Andrus, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. Andrus is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed four or more in the last three games she's played. Evannah Richardson was another key player, putting up four points and 14 rebounds.

Even though they lost, St. Johns smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in 16 consecutive matchups.

Mogollon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ava Plantholt, who posted ten points and five boards. Plantholt continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Heidi Parry, who had six points along with seven assists and five rebounds.

St. Johns suffered their first road defeat, dropping their record down to 18-3. As for Mogollon, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.

St. Johns wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 56-15 victory against Pinon on the 16th. As for Mogollon, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 56-27 win against Williams on the 17th.
