Recap: Midlothian Trojans vs. Monacan Chiefs

The Midlothian Trojans lost against the Monacan Chiefs back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Midlothian fell to Monacan 60-54. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Midlothian in their matchups with Monacan: they've now lost six in a row.

Midlothian's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bella Hutton, who scored 15 points. That's the first time this season that Hutton scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Layla Royster, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds.

Trinity Jones continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Monacan, dropping a double-double on 28 points and 11 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Jones scored 15 or more points. Amirah Washington was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with nine rebounds and six steals.

Midlothian has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season. As for Monacan, their victory was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-3.

Midlothian won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Powhatan at 7:15 p.m. on January 11th. Powhatan will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 204th, while Midlothian is ranked 98th). Monacan won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Richmond City School of the Arts at 6:00 p.m. on January 11th. Richmond City School of the Arts comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 22 points in their last eight games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
