Basketball Recap: Jane Kern Key Part of a Team Effort in Capitals Win

Broughton hadn't done well against Cardinal Gibbons recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Broughton Capitals snuck past the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders with a 47-41 win. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 66-56 last Monday.

Broughton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jane Kern led the charge by putting up 13 points in addition to six boards and four steals. Kern has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 18 times she's played. Kendall Walpole was another key player, scoring 12 points and six rebounds.

Broughton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Cardinal Gibbons lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Miller Kuss, who posted 12 points and five boards. Kuss is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Hughes, who earned 11 points and three steals.

Broughton's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-9. As for Cardinal Gibbons, their loss dropped their record down to 7-12.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Broughton has already played their next game (against Sanderson), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Cardinal Gibbons will challenge Leesville Road at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Leesville Road will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something Cardinal Gibbons surely won't give up without a fight.
