Softball Preview: St. Joseph Spartans vs. Highlands Golden Rams
The St. Joseph Spartans are taking a road trip to square off against the Highlands Golden Rams at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
St. Joseph is leaving town to face Highlands after disappointing their home crowd in their season opener. St. Joseph came up short against Apollo Ridge on Monday, falling 18-0. Sadly, the defeat continues a streak the team started last season, making it four in a row.
Meanwhile, Highlands got the win against Penn Hills on Monday by a conclusive 14-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Golden Rams.
Madison Gorney made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Gorney was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carrah Scardina, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Another player making a difference was Gabby Chambers, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI.
Highlands was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Penn Hills only posted a batting average of .062.
