Basketball Preview: Falls Lake Firebirds vs. NCSSM: Durham Unicorns
Falls Lake is 7-2 against the Unicorns since November of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Falls Lake Firebirds will head out on the road to face off against the NCSSM: Durham Unicorns at 6:00 p.m. Falls Lake is looking to tack on another W to their 23-game streak on the road dating back to last season.
Falls Lake put the finishing touches on their ninth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They breezed by Raleigh Charter on the road to the tune of 53-22. Given Falls Lake's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 108th, while the Phoenix are ranked 470th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Emerson Thompson continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds. Thompson is crushing the rebound category: she's posted at least ten every time she's taken the court this season. Khloe Massengill was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, NCSSM: Durham entered their tilt with the Patriots with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. NCSSM: Durham enjoyed a cozy 45-29 victory over the Patriots on Tuesday.
Falls Lake's win bumped their record up to 21-2. As for NCSSM: Durham, their win bumped their record up to 10-7.
Falls Lake strolled past the Unicorns in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 52-38. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was NCSSM: Durham's Maren Donlon, who scored 19 points. Now that she's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Falls Lake still be able to contain Donlon? There's only one way to find out.
