Baseball Game Preview: Carthage Comets vs. Indian River Wolves

The Carthage Comets will venture away from home to square off against the Indian River Wolves at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Carthage is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, Carthage came up short against South Jefferson and fell 7-3.

Meanwhile, Indian River got themselves on the board against General Brown on Tuesday, but General Brown never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over the Lions. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Wolves have posted against the Lions since May 10, 2023.

Chase Bearup was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dominic Cappuccetti, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Chesney McConnell, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Indian River's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Carthage, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.

Carthage suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Indian River when the teams last played back in April of 2025. Can the Comets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
