League recap: Cottonwood surprises Brighton

Cottonwood scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Brighton, 42-35. At the time, the Bengals was ranked ninth in the state, while the Colts was 42nd.

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Cottonwood, who took down ninth ranked Brighton, 42-35. Aleni Aiono in the win.

Colton Michaelsen provided a threat through the air and on the ground as West Jordan beat Copper Hills. He completed 10 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 60 yards. Michaelsen's favorite target this week was Diego Barajas, who caught three passes for 106 yards.

Austin Kafentzis was the most productive running back in 5A Region 3 this week. He ran for 95 yards on 17 carries as Jordan bested the Grizzlies. Teammate Clay Moss added to the ground attack by rushing for 95 yards.

Chipper Lucero put up the best numbers through the air as Alta lost to Don Bosco Prep. He finished with 22 completions for 288 yards and three touchdowns. Lucero's favorite target this week was Ammon Barker, who caught five passes for 100 yards.

The Hawks' Lucero and Barker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Lucero has thrown for 1999 yards this season, while Barker, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 37 catches for 657 yards. The Beetdiggers' Kafentzis leads the league in rushing yards with 1009.

Entering into this week's contest against Copper Hills, Lucero is short just one passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.

Two highly touted recruits will be in the spotlight when Greg Coshaw's team and Jordan meet this week. The Colts features well-regarded senior Siale Fakailoatonga while Eric Kjar's team has Kafentzis, a sought after sophomore.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Ryan Bullett's team takes on Kai Kapele's team. As it stands, the Bengals are in second, while the Grizzlies are in fourth.

Michaelsen and Barajas provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Copper Hills. The longest such play in 5A Region 3 this season, the connection resulted in 85 yards.
