Softball Game Preview: Covington Trojans vs. Crawfordsville Athenians

The Covington Trojans will head out to take on the Crawfordsville Athenians at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Covington will be strutting in after a win while Crawfordsville will be coming in after a loss.

Covington not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 15th (when they won 25-9). They were the clear victors by a 12-3 margin over Fountain Central. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Trojans.

Alexus Peaslee spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, Haley Holycross and Preslee Shaw did most of the damage at the plate: Holycross fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-4, while Shaw went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those two home runs gave Holycross a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alex Sutherlin, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Meanwhile, Crawfordsville was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They lost 18-8 to Parke Heritage.

Christina Susdorf made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Madison Martin was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run.

Covington's victory bumped their record up to 5-9. As for Crawfordsville, their loss dropped their record down to 1-12.

Everything went Covington's way against Crawfordsville in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Covington made off with a 12-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
