Harlingen South has gone a perfect 8-0 against Edcouch-Elsa recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Hawks will head out on the road to face off against the Yellowjackets at 6:30 p.m. Harlingen South is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Harlingen South fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Mercedes on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 7-6. That makes it the first time this season the Hawks have let down their home crowd.
Lexi Sandoval was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she tossed 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 4-for-5.
In other batting news, Kara Jensen was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 1-for-4. Georgia Chapa also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Edcouch-Elsa has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 3.84 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Tuesday. They came up short against Weslaco East, falling 10-4. The Yellowjackets' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Edcouch-Elsa saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Melody Soto, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Edcouch-Elsa's record now sits at 14-5. As for Harlingen South, they suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 13-5.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Harlingen South hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .343. However, it's not like Edcouch-Elsa struggles in that department as they've averaged .328. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Harlingen South's way against Edcouch-Elsa in their previous meeting back in March, as Harlingen South made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
