Softball Preview: Wharton Tigers vs. El Campo Ricebirds
Wharton is 0-10 against El Campo since March of 2019 but things could change on Tuesday. The Wharton Tigers will welcome the El Campo Ricebirds at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Having struggled with four losses in a row, Wharton turned things around against Hill Country Christian School of Austin on Friday. They put the hurt on the Knights with a sharp 20-2 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Tigers considering their two-run performance the matchup before.
Wharton let B Gilmore and Alenna Castillo run wild. Gilmore scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Castillo scored two runs while going 2-for-2. K Hernandez was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Wharton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .857. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, El Campo entered their tilt with Orange Grove on Saturday with four consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with five. Everything went their way against the Bulldogs as they made off with a 13-1 victory.
Rylan Staff was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Staff was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mac'Yia Warner, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Addisyn Fisher, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Wharton's win bumped their record up to 3-6. As for El Campo, their victory bumped their record up to 12-2-1.
