Soccer Game Preview: Maywood CES vs. Marquez

Maywood CES hasn't had much luck against Marquez recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Maywood CES Wolfpack are taking a road trip to challenge the Marquez Gladiators at 4:00 p.m. Maywood CES will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more goals each matchup than the last.

Last Thursday, it was close, but Maywood CES sidestepped Maywood Academy for a 4-3 victory. It was an even better day for Melvin Cruz as he scored three goals for his team.

Maywood CES used a slightly different lineup for their bout with Maywood Academy. David Espinoza played for 80 minutes having averaged 43.8 this season and Jessie Andrade got 80 vs. an average of 45. Espinoza made the most of the opportunity, putting up one assist A few more games like that and he might be seeing even more time going forward.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Marquez). Their defense stepped up to hand Torres a 5-0 shutout on Thursday. Given the Gladiators' advantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 460th, while the Toros are ranked 964th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Maywood CES's win bumped their record up to 6-7-1. As for Marquez, their victory bumped their record up to 2-3-5.

Maywood CES came up short against Marquez when the teams last played back in January of 2024, falling 3-1. Can Maywood CES avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
