Baseball Recap: Norwich Comes Up Short

Norwich extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 29 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-16 in the process. They took a 7-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chenango Valley Warriors. That's two games in a row now that the Purple Tornado have lost by exactly four runs.

Kaden Downey made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Hunter Coombs also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

As for Chenango Valley, their record is now 7-8. The victory continues a trend for them in their matchups with Norwich: they've now won three in a row.

On Chenango Valley's side, Jimmy Fitzgerald was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and not a single walk). Those ten strikeouts gave Fitzgerald a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ty Stafford, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one double. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. DJ Steen was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Norwich will welcome Johnson City at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Chenango Valley, they will be playing at home against Windsor Central at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
