Softball Recap: Westbrook Comes Up Short

Westbrook had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-4 to make it six. They fell just short of the Haddam-Killingworth Cougars by a score of 9-8. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

As for Haddam-Killingworth, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 3-0. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 13.7 runs this season.

For Haddam-Killingworth's part, Emma Giaccone spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 15 Ks. Giaccone has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Caley Napoletano, who went 3-for-4 with two triples, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Grace Natanzon, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Westbrook will take on rival North Branford at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Haddam-Killingworth is set to square off against their familiar foe Hale Ray at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
